Who says that you need a massive 40cm freeride fin on your board? Why do board companies supply their boards with such long fins, growing up, we never needed those massive fins? Equipment has changed over the years (a lot!) and fins have increased in size, what this means for the typical windsurfer is that they are somewhat stuck with a big long fin as standard. This seems rather a backward way of doing things, it makes it harder to beach start, easier to hit submerged objects and most annoyingly really easy to cut yourself or damage your sail etc. Hence for many people long fins are sub-optimal at best. When we were approached by Rene Egli windsurfing and kitesurfing center in Fuerteventura to produce a low water fin for their lagoon which is popular with freeirde and is extremely shallow. The FreeDELTA RE
was the ideal opportunity to think differently and takes its name thanks to its design philosophy and the center we originally made it for. The RE lagoon is extremely shallow and a traditional fin has serious limitations there. Working closely with the center we designed a fin which suit a large range of boards in their rental fleet and accommodate a large range of sails and riders. It needed to be short, about half the length of a regular fin! At the same time we saw the potential to make an excellent weed fin and hence incorporated these design parameters into the fin. The result is an amazing new fin which is at home in a massively wide range of conditions, range of boards, range of sail and very different riders. Thanks to the extremely wide range of use and user friendliness when under or over powered we made just three sizes to cover most freeride situations.

FreeDelta RE fin
I bought a 22.5 FreeDelta RE fin for Buzzards Bay, Mass where we have sandbars and a lot of weed. I liked it so much I bought 2 more, a 21 and a 24. They seem to work well and make windsurfing a lot more fun in our shallow water.

Delta RE fin
I just tried the Delta RE fin during a trip to Hatteras and it was fantastic. If you have ever sailed Pamlico Sound you know how shallow it is and using a large fin is difficult.I used a 22.5 cm delta and never hit bottom and what was also nice I got the same performance out of it as my 40 cm weed fin. This is a awesome fin for shallow weedy sailing

Short length and superb durability makes this fin great for shallow water. Spots that would be otherwise too shallow are now usable. Saves on carrying gear to reach deep water. Helps a lot with beachstart. Makes it possible to beachstart in marginal wind. Great upwind performance. Works great with my 6.6m2 sail, not so well with 8.2m2.
Sometimes loses grip when planning over large chop. In moderate chop it helps to weight the tail to keep the fin fully submerged.
