Surge Pro 87 - 3 Piece Travel Paddle
This is a seriously good surf paddle!
I initially got this for travelling with my inflatable SUP however I now use this as my go to paddle it's that good.. Like other reviewers I was amazed at how light this paddle is, it doesn't have a huge amount of flex which I like however it feels incredibly solid especially when it's under the pump!
Chris was fantastic to deal with, clarified some queries I had and his advice was on the money.. service was great and I can highly recommend BP's gear for anyone thinking of taking the plunge.. I'm glad I did!
Thanks again Chris..

Amazing Travel Paddle!
This paddle is awesome!!! I needed a paddle that I could easily take on a plane for a vacation (along with my inflatable board). In my online search, I stumbled on these Black Project paddles. I hesitantly bought a 3 piece all carbon with the Surge 87 blade. I had questions about how long the pieces of the paddle would be, when it would arrive, etc. Their customer service was great, and they shipped it to me right away. The paddle arrived and I took it out of it's really nice travel bag. "The thing seems too light" I thought. In my bag it went and after several days of all day paddling I can say that this paddle is the best I've ever owned and will actually be replacing my one-piece. It is extremely light, but feels built solid as a rock. The hex joins make it feel like a one piece. If you are in the market for a paddle, do yourself a favor and buy one of these bad boys. The 3-piece is awesome for travel and doesn't compromise on performance. These paddles are definitely worth spending a little extra on!

After breaking almost every paddle I have owned and recently two Naish Kevlar paddles, I figured I'd give the Surge 82 a chance. It came in at 12.5 Oz, which is incredibly light. Actually scared me a little as I am a beast with my equipment. After several months of use, I love the paddle, I love the smaller diameter shaft size and the face blade. It has some flex but still gets the pull I need. I just need to adjust a little on my cadence as I was coming from bigger blades. I just got back from a week in Oahu and a week in Fiji (Cloudbreak) and have put this thru the ringer! The red handle is a welcome visual to show which way is up and down when making quick decisions. I weight 196lbs and am 5-9" and ride a 7-4" JK custom 96L and have been SUP surfing for 7 years.
I highly recommend giving these guys a shot. First class operation and response.

82 Surge surf paddle
Great surf paddle! At 192lbs, I was previously using 95 & 90 sq in paddle blades. After another co's 90 sq in paddle started causing me shoulder pain, I decided to downsize my blade size. I heard about Black Project and decided to purchase a Surge. The 82 BP Surge is feather light with a reduced diameter shaft. This combined with the slightly smaller blade size has increased my cadence. The increased cadence is great for catching waves, spinning my board and maintaining balance without pulling myself off board. I also discovered this paddle is much better & more ergonomic when prone paddling out with paddle under chest (more comfortable & shaft sits lower to board).
My only minor criticism is that the BP laminated label in the lower hand area creates a smooth spot that makes the shaft a bit slippery. This can easily be corrected with paddle wax or possibly roughing up with low grit sandpaper. Otherwise, great product, well done Black Project!

Surge 82 Paddle
All I can say is WOW! This paddle is absolutely amazing! It is almost weightless, making it effortless to switch between right and left handed grip. It has tremendous power when pumping onto a wave. My first time out using this paddle I was able to catch 2-3 times as many waves as i had with my old aluminum paddle. I felt no fatigue at the end of the session. I cant say enough good things about it! Very happy

82 sq in Surge Surf Paddle
To be honest, the Black Project Surge surf paddle took a little getting used to, but only because the 82 sq. in. blade and reduced diameter shaft is so incredibly light. The paddle is comfortable to use and amazingly quick and responsive. Aside from the performance attributes of the Surge paddle, I often feel compelled to show people how impressively well-crafted these paddles are. The transition from the blade to the shaft is the best that I have ever seen in my 10 years of stand up paddling. No matter how careful you are at some point you'll probably wack the side of your board when paddling hard for a wave and the ultra smooth transition and connection between the blade and shaft will minimize, if not eliminate rail nicks completely.
Keep up the brilliant work Black Project. Can't wait to see what products are coming up next.

77 sq in Surge
Just got back from a 10-day trip to Mexico. The paddle was great! I LOVE the reduced shaft diameter--picking up my old paddle feels so strange now. The 77 sq inch worked well for my injured shoulder and is a great size for my weight (I'm 148 lbs). This paddle is insanely light and the rounded edge on the blade seemed to offer a bit of protection on my board's rails. The ergo-t handle is comfy. And the red handle is a nice touch. I dropped my paddle after taking a fall and the handle was easy to spot in the impact zone. My buddy picked up my paddle on the first day of the trip and I caught him ordering one online the next morning! Nice work on the design--great to have a paddle geared 100% towards surfing.

Just got this the other day, so here is a quick review.
Some info on me:
- 5'8, 145 lbs
- Board: 2014 Starboard Pro Carbon 8'0x28" 96L
- previous paddle was Epic Pro 95
I was drawn to the Surge mostly for the smaller blade size, and the fact that it was designed for surf - the only type of SUP I do.
After a couple of hours and some good waves, here are some quick thoughts.
- Smaller blade size really helped my stamina, this was my first time out in ages, and normally I would be more tired
- Blade shape and size definitely felt more solid than my Epic 95
- Short and stabby positioning strokes were easier, I found the blade stayed under more easily, whereas with the Epic 95 sometimes it breaks free or feathers at the worst time and you blow a takeoff. That was far less common for me with the Surge
- skinny shaft was great for me, although if you have big hands it may be a bit awkward (fingers may bump into the bottom of your palm)
- the weight (or lack of it) is so nice... granted I chopped 5" off compared to my last paddle. I briefly borrowed a fiberglass blade and shafted paddle to let someone try the surge, and the weight difference was ridiculous. Coming form the Epic it wasn't hugely different, but it definitely felt great.
- flexy shaft is nice (i had the Epic in Flex), really solidifies and smooths out each stroke. Of course you do lose a bit of efficiency and torque, but the solid connection to the water via the paddle made me feel really solid on the board
I'll give it 5/5 with the asterisk of having based this only on a single 2 hour session. So far though, everything I was hoping for.
